Mines should be in the game, they would be very usefull in space. The problem however is that the game is not capable of handling alot of objects at once, a few thousands of mines in an astroidfield would not only bog down a "visitor" to a silly point but it would make it close to impossible for the personb there to do anything.
It would in my opinion be better if you instead of deploying mines one by one you place shall we call it a balloon of mines, the computer only has to account for one cantral point. The mine launcher would create the baloon and the more mines put into the balloon the greater the radius.
At present a single mine is just that, one mine, if the mine item counted as one package of 100 mines then it can easily be forseable that one such mine might cover say a 10km3 globe, each extra mine package would then expand the globe to twise the volume (its realy easy to have a computer calculate the new range).
The minefield would then be portrayed on the screen as a cloud of vapor or similar, the mines in reality being rather small on their own but the damage made up by a multitude of charges going off.
If a ship enters the field mines would start going off but unlike now the entire field would not go off at once, if you enter the field one package of mines would go off, the balloon of mines would shrink and become smaller as well as a timer start, once the timer runs out the ship would detonate another "package" untill ither the ship has cleared the field or all the packages explode.
Naturaly parmanent structures like stations, jumpgates and the likes would dislike having minefileds close by, hence they should carry countermeasures to rid the closest ranges around them (say 20km).
Now then, the ranges I have written above are taken off the top of my head , I have no Idea if they would meen it becomes close to impossible to lay a field big enough to make a difference or make it too easy to blanket entire sectors of space, I leave the actual calculations to the devs if they like the Idea.
